My research covers a broad spectrum of forest management challenges, with a central focus on applying operations research (OR) methods to formulate and solve complex decision-making problems through mathematical optimization. I adopt a systems approach to model the interactions among forest ecosystems, industrial supply chains, government policies, and society. My academic interests lie at the intersection of forest science, forest economics, industrial engineering, data science, computer science, and operations research. I am continually seeking motivated students—particularly those who are quantitative, innovative, and eager to explore entirely new approaches.

Previous Faculty

Dr. Griess, is a Full Professor at the Department of Environmental System Sciences at ETH Zurich. She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Resources Management and was the Head of the FRESH lab from 2014 – 2022. She holds a PhD in Forest Management and Economics from Technische Universität München, Germany, an MSc in Forest and Wood Science, and a degree in Forest Engineering.

Verena’s research focuses on the use of sustainable forest management practices, the development of decision support systems to better understand the consequences of various management pathways, as well as the assessment of risks. Examples include the development of key indicators for the inclusion of First Nations heritage values in forest management planning software or the development of inventory-based survival probabilities for use in economic models.
